A Statistical Survey on the Psychiatric Casualty in ROK Air Force

Abstract
The author, attempted to survey the general tendencies statistically of all the psychiatric patients (105. cases), who were hospitalized in Aero Medical Center for recent three years (34 months) as a preliminary study for psychiatric problems in Korean Air Force and compared the results with those of other Forces and the statistical data on the psychiatric, patients, admitted in the Aero Medical Center from 1961 to 1963.
Regarding to¢¥ the facts that 50% of psychiatric patients were admitted to hospital -within first year of active military service and 43% of cases were mentally invalid already at the enlistment, we could conclude that the psychiatric inpatients would be reduced to an half in number if the psychiatric screening was done ideally.
Moreover, when we consider the facts that 37% of patients lost their effectiveness as combat warriors, despite of relatively, longstanding hospitalization (average, 73 days) in psychiatric patients, and the prime role of military medicine is in the effective selection of soldiers and prevention of physical and mental -disability, psychiatric screening, which has been disregarded, is of a ¢¥great importance. To investigate and to apply the most ideal and effective methods at the screening is responsible to Korean military psychiatrists.
